Denver, CO—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (8-2) continued its fast start to the 2017 season with a 3-2 victory over San Diego State Friday afternoon at the Denver Invitational.
SET ONE (25-19, UCR)
Key Runs: The Highlanders scored the first two points and never trailed the entire set. It was still a two-point set, however, at 9-7, when UC Riverside scored three straight points, and five of the next six to take control.
SET TWO (25-22, UCR)
Key Run: The second set saw 12 ties, the last of which came at 18-18. The Highlanders took advantage of two attack errors and a bad set to go up by three, and take a lead they would never relinquish.
SET THREE (25-23, SDSU)
Key Runs: The Highlanders led 23-20, but the Aztecs scored the final five points thanks in part to four UC Riverside attack errors to win the set.
SET FOUR (25-18, SDSU)
Key Runs: The Aztecs scored the first five points and never trailed, although the Highlanders did cut the lead to two on a few occasions, the last of which came at 16-14. San Diego State scored the next three points, and eventually tied the match at two sets apiece.
SET FIVE (15-7, UCR)
Key Runs: Trailing 6-5, UC Riverside scored four straight, and 10 of the last 11 points to secure the five-set victory. Mickayla Sherman had three kills over the final four points.
GAME NOTES
UC Riverside's 8-2 start to the season trails only the 2005 squad for best 10-match start in the Highlanders' 17-year Division I history. The 2005 team began the year 9-1 through 10 matches. The Highlanders' eight wins already matches the 2016 team's win total.
Mickayla Sherman, who did not play in five of the team's first six matches, led the Highlanders with a season-high 16 kills.
The Big K-Ahuna (Kaiuani Ahuna) recorded her third kills-digs double-double of the season with 12 and 14 respectively. Her double-digit kills effort was her sixth of the season.
The Highlanders were 2-19 against the Aztecs heading into the match. Their last win over San Diego State prior to Friday was a 3-0 sweep on September 3, 2005 (
