Comeback Not Enough in Game Two Against Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside erased a three-run deficit on Saturday night in game two with Cal Poly, falling 4-3 in 11 innings at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Nathan Webb opened the evening with a web gem at third before turning a 5-4-3 double play on a short hop to leave Cal Poly with the bases loaded. Webb, who was named a top 50 preseason third baseman by D1 Baseball, continued settling back into the Highlander lineup after missing all of March.

The Riverside native picked up his first hit of the season in the seventh inning on a single that turned into the game-tying run.

The Mustangs cushioned their lead with a two-run RBI double in the fourth inning, but UCR wasn't far behind. Jacob Badawi led off the sixth with his second double of the season and first since April 2. Badawi came home on Dylan Orick's team leading 13th double of the season to break up the shutout..

Jacob Shanks drove in Orick with a single to left field, cutting Cal Poly's lead down to 3-2. UCR tied the ballgame on Jacob Badawi's RBI groundout and threatened to go ahead, but could not put a fourth run across with runners on first and second.

Andrez Melendrez kept his positive stretch at the plate up, going at least 2 for 3 in three straight games now after a two-hit performance in Saturday's game two. Melendrez singled in the sixth to put Webb on third before his game-tying run.

Sergio Ramirez relieved Jeremiah Priddy on the mound after six innings and tossed a gem of a relief effort, yielding the Mustangs to just one hit in his three innings of action.

Joey Nicolai led off the bottom of the ninth with his 13th hit by pitch of the season, then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Cal Poly's defense sent the game to extra innings. UCR threatened once more in the 10th with Anthony Mata stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball before Jacob Shanks lined out to right.

Cal Poly finally broke the deadlock with an RBI double in the 11th.

UCR and Cal Poly will finish the three-game series with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch on Sunday from the Riverside Sports Complex before the Highlanders begin a seven-game road trip on Tuesday at LMU.
