Martinez: Budweiser Responsibility Matters Good Sport of the Month
8/3/2009 3:47:49 PM | Women's Track and Field
Riverside, CA - Anheuser-Busch has teamed up with UC Riverside athletics and chosen Women's Track and Field athlete Brenda Martinez as the August recipient of the "Budweiser Responsibility Matters Good Sport of the Month." Please visit the Budweiser Responsibility Matters webpage for past recipients.
Martinez traveled to Europe in the beginning of July to compete in six races over four weeks. In her first-ever European event, she ran what was then a UCR record 2:01.03 in the 800m run, besting past NCAA Champions to claim her first victory.
Five days later Martinez broke the school record in the 1500m run, winning her second race in as many tries. On July 26 she moved closer to breaking the two-minute mark in the 800m, winning her race in 2:00.86 - bettering the record she set in her prior race.
Martinez then finished fifth in the 1500m run on July 31 but bounced back with a second place finish in the 800m run on August 2. She has one event remaining on her European docket: the 800m run on August 8.
This marks the second month in a row and third overall that the Rancho Cucamonga rising senior has been selected as the Highlanders athlete of the month. Martinez was selected as the April recipient after earning her first All-American honor at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and was selected as the July recipient after earning her second All-American award at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Anheuser-Busch congratulates Martinez for demonstrating that RESPONSIBILITY REALLY DOES MATTER!
