UC Riverside 8, Saint Mary's 5 Box Score
Highlanders Win First Game Of Double Header, 1-0
Moraga, CA—UC Riverside entered the top of the ninth trailing Saint Mary's 5-4, but the Highlanders banged out four hits and scored four runs in the inning to pick up an 8-5, come-from-behind win and sweep the Saturday double header from the Gaels. Brian McConkey (pictured) drove home what would prove to be the game-winning run with a double down the left field line that plated Bryan Horst.
The Highlanders and Gaels surpassed the combined offensive output of the first game by the bottom of the second as Horst drove in Justin Shults in the top of the second with a double to right, and Saint Mary's Michael Cipolla came home in the bottom half of the frame on a wild pitch.
UC Riverside regained the lead in the top of the third as Robert Brantly's infield single with one out scored Hur who doubled the previous at bat.
Saint Mary's knotted the game at two in their half of the second pushing an unearned run across the plate as Troy Channing came home on Horst's two-out miscue off of Cipolla's bat.
UCR starter Eddie Orozco continued to struggle in the top of the fourth when Shawn O'Brien brought Markus Melgosa home with a one-out single to right. The Highlanders' Robert Brantly made it a 3-3 ballgame in the top of the fifth as he cleared the right field fence with a two-out blast for his third homer of the season.
Trevor Frank replaced Orozco to start the bottom of the fifth, and he was unceremoniously greeted with a single and a walk. An infield ground out would plate one of the runs, and Toby DeMello's single to left made it 5-3 Gaels.
The Highlanders got one back in the top of the sixth as Mike Nesbitt's single down the right field line brought Eddie Young home from second. UC Riverside began the seventh and eighth with singles, but on both occasions those runners were erased on double plays.
Nesbitt opened the top of the ninth with a double to left center and Horst's single up the middle scored Nesbitt. Trevor Hairgrove's sac bunt moved Nesbitt into scoring position, and McConkey's double down the left field line gave UC Riverside the lead. The Highlanders weren't done scoring, however, as Joey Gonzales capped of the rally with a two-run homer over the right field wall.
Mike Wolford, who entered the game with two outs in the eighth, pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first win of the season.
The Highlanders and Gaels finish their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 pm PT
