Low Round Of The Day Vaults Men's Golf To 3rd At Big West Championship

San Jacinto, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Golf Team shot the low round of the day Monday in the second round of the Big West Conference Championship at the Country Club at Soboba Springs, vaulting into the top half of the field following a first-round performance that left them last. The Highlanders shot a season-low, six-under-par 282 on Monday with all five scores in the 70's, and four of them under par. David Gazzolo and Pachara Sakulyong both carded a two-under 70 while Sam Gillis and Leven Simon Seay came in at one-under 71.
UCR leapfrogged six teams en route to a third place spot out of nine squads, compiling a two-day score of 586. Cal State Fullerton leads the team competition with a 578 total—eight ahead of the Highlanders—while UC Davis sits second at 580. UC Riverside is only one stroke ahead of fourth-place Long Beach State, however, and two in front of UC Irvine.
Gazzolo is the Highlanders top finisher after two rounds tying for seventh with a 143 (73-70). He is only two shots away from a tie for second place, and seven strokes back of the leader, UC Davis' Matt Hansen (136).
Gillis is tied for 12th with 75-71 (146), while Sakulyong shot 79-70 (149) to tie for 19th. Simon Seay (80-71) and Brandon Tsujimoto (77-74) are tied for 24th with identical 151 totals to round out the squad.
The final round of the Big West Conference Championship gets underway Tuesday morning with tee times starting at 7:30 am PT.
