Riverside—CollegeSportsMadness.com released its 2014 Big West Preseason All-Conference Teams today, and three members of the Highlanders are among those honored. Midfielder Sammy Arellano and defender Briana Thomasson were both named to the First Team, while Tyler Cunningham earned a Second Team nod.
Arellano finished her 2013 freshman campaign ranking second on the team in points (8), goals (3) and assists (2), earning All-Big West, Honorable Mention accolades from the conference, and All-Big West, Second Team honors from CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Thomasson, a junior, also earned CollegeSportsMadness.com All-Conference Second Team honors last season for her efforts anchoring the Highlanders' defense.
During her sophomore season, Cunningham led UC Riverside in goals (5) and points (10), en route to a Second-Team, All-Conference nod from the Big West, and from CollegeSportsMadness.com. Two of her scores came in the Highlanders' 2-1, regular-season ending win over Long Beach State, which allowed them to secure the number three seed in the conference tournament (box score/recap).
UC Riverside begins its 2014 regular season the weekend of August 22-24 at the UNLV Rebel Classic. The Highlanders will take on Grand Canyon on Friday at 4:30 pm PT, and Northern Arizona on Sunday at 10:30 am.
