9/30/2014 3:32:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Irvine, CA—The Big West Conference announced Tuesday that UC Riverside seniors Raquel Hefflin and Seth Totten were named the league's cross country athletes of the week following their performances at the Stanford Invitational on September 27.
Hefflin finished second overall out of 330 runners at the meet, making her the top finisher from any school in the Big West. Her time of 20:39 was just eight seconds behind the winner, Washington State's Abby Regan, and her second place finish is the best for the Highlanders at a national-level meet in the program's history.Â
Â
Hefflin's performance helped the Highlanders place sixth among 21 scoring teams in the Division I category. They beat out five other Big West schools in UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, CSUN, UC Irvine and Hawai'i.
Totten finished seventh overall among 361 individual runners at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 23:46—a new personal-best for an 8k race. He finished just six seconds back of fifth place, and 11 seconds behind third as he helped the Highlanders finish ninth out of 17 teams, and ahead of Big West counterparts UC Irvine, Long Beach State and CSUN.
This is the second Big West Athlete of the Week honor for both UC Riverside runners this season, as Hefflin earned the accolade back on September 2 (story) and Totten earned the honor on September 16 (story).
