RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside fell 9-3 to Cal Poly in game one of a three-game series on Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Mason Grace went 2 for 3 against the Mustangs, his fifth multi-hit game of the season and second in his last four games. Andrez Melendrez also went 2 for 3 on the evening in his fifth game of the season. After a 2-for-3 outing against Utah Valley on Wednesday, the Moreno Valley native has logged hits in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
Cruz Barrios put in six innings of relief work for UCR on Friday with three strikeouts, retiring 11 of 12 batters after the second inning.
Dylan Orick doubled to right field in the bottom of the ninth to erase UCR's goose egg, driving in Melendrez and Jacob Badawi on the first pitch of his at bat. Jayden Lopez kept the Highlanders' spirit alive with the second RBI double of the inning to bring home Orick, who has now reached base in five of his last six games.
