Irvine, CA—The Big West Conference announced Tuesday that UC Riverside seniors Raquel Hefflin and Seth Totten were named the league's cross country athletes of the week following their performances at the Highlander Invitational on October 18.
Hefflin took home first place honors at Highlander Invitational this past Saturday morning setting a new school record in the process as UCR won the 5k event, placing first out of eight teams. UC Riverside has now won the Highlander Invitational twice in the past three years.
Hefflin's time of 16:46.6 beat the previous school record by five and a half seconds, and beat her own personal-best 5k time by around 25 seconds. She also finished 15 seconds ahead of the next runner. This is also Hefflin's second straight individual victory at the Highlander Invitational, as she won last year's event as well.
On the men's side, Totten won the 6k Highlander Invitational on Saturday in a course-record time of 17:27.7, helping UCR to a first place team finish out of seven squads.
Â
Totten beat out his closest competitor by 24 seconds in setting a new personal best 6k mark, while also beating the previous course record by almost 10 seconds.
This is the third Big West Athlete of the Week honor for both UC Riverside runners this season, as Hefflin earned the accolade back on September 2 (story), Totten earned the honor on September 16 (story), and both swept the award on September 30 (story).
