San Jacinto, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Golf Team secured a third place finish at the Big West Conference Championship Tuesday following the cancelation of the final round due to unplayable weather conditions. High wind gusts up to 40 mph initially delayed the start of the third round, but it was finally determined that the course was unsuitable for playing, forcing a cancelation.
"The start was delayed until 9:00 am, and we observed the first 50 minutes of play and found that golf balls weren't holding on the greens," stated Rob Halvaks, Big West Deputy Commissioner. "With no prediction of certainty of when the conditions would be playable, we met with the SCGA rules officials and determined canceling the final round was our only option."
This is the first time the tournament has been shortened since 2003 when rain allowed just two rounds of competition.
The Highlanders jumped up six spots after Monday's second round of competition, shooting the low round of the day—six-under 282—to place third out of nine teams. It is the highest finish for the blue and gold since the 2004 and 2005 squads won back-to-back conference championships.
UCR's 586 two-round score was only eight off the pace of the winner, Cal State Fullerton (578), and six behind second-place UC Davis (580). The Highlanders held off Long Beach State and UC Irvine by one and two strokes respectively to earn their top-three spot.
"We are disappointed with the day," UC Riverside Head Coach Eric Riehle stated. "As a team we felt very prepared for the course and conditions and were excited to have the opportunity to compete for a championship.
"Looking on the positive side, we are pleased with our third-place results—our program's highest finish since 2005. With a junior and four freshman in the lineup, the future couldn't be brighter for years to come."
David Gazzolo was the Highlanders best finisher, tying for seventh with a 143 (73-70). He was only two shots away from a tie for second place, and seven strokes back of the leader, UC Davis' Matt Hansen (136).
Sam Gillis tied for 12th with scores of 75-71 (146) while Pachara Sakulyong shot 79-70 (149) to tie for 19th, and Leven Simon Seay (80-71) and Brandon Tsujimoto (77-74) tied for 24th with identical 151 totals.
Cal State Fullerton advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals as the conference's automatic qualifier.
