Volleyball Downs Savannah State In Three Sets For Second Win Of Weekend
9/6/2014 11:06:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
Cedar City, UT - The UC Riverside Volleyball team earned its second win of the weekend Saturday downing Savannah State 25-8, 25-14 and 25-15 to conclude action at the Southern Utah Tournament. The Highlanders (2-4) started the weekend with a 3-1 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday (box score/recap) before falling to the host Thunderbirds Friday evening (box score/recap).
UCR's 2-4 start to the season is its best since 2012 when the squad opened the year with a 3-3 mark.
Junior transfer Helena Peric led UC Riverside with a career-best nine kills while Ashley Cox added seven, and Megan Reza and Alex Gresham both had six kills.
The Highlanders came out of the gate strong in the first set opening up a 5-1 lead, and continued its offensive onslaught quickly building a double-digit margin. UCR closed out the set scoring the final seven straight points, turning an 18-8 advantage into a 25-8 win.
The second set started similarly as UC Riverside went on for a 6-1 early lead, never letting the Tigers closer than four the rest of the way as they cruised to the 25-14 victory.
Savannah State battled the Highlanders early in set three, getting as close as 5-4, but a 7-0 run by UCR quickly turned the tables as the lead was pushed out to 11-4. The Highlanders kept their momentum and the lead never dipped, and closed out the match scoring four straight to claim the sweep.
The three-set win is the first for UC Riverside since a 3-0 victory over Villanova on September 15, 2012 (box score/recap).
The Highlanders now prepare for three matches at the Northern Arizona Tournament scheduled for September 12-13 in Flagstaff, AZ.
